This game is embracing how useless we would all be in an actual apocalypse. You see, instead of a crafting menu or a recipe book, you use a smartphone to Google how to survive because you and your friends are just ordinary people stuck inside a town that's been quarantined from the outside world. And all you have is your smartphone. So if you want to build a base, fix an engine or find out which mushrooms are safe to eat, you have to look it up online first. But the developers made a rather interesting if not silly decision to fill the in game internet with pop up ads, clickbait and a lot of captures. And every minute you waste dealing with them drains your phone's battery, meaning you're one pop up away from being alone in the dark. This game is called Online 4:04, coming to steam on October 16th.

Everyone is arguing about the movement in the new gears of war, but the change we should actually care about is the one the series has been missing for years. The four player co op campaign. We haven't had that in 15 years since Gears 3. Which is totally nuts, but E Day is built differently to the old gears games. It's set in Colona, the biggest location they've ever built, and a lot of it is semi open districts filled with side quests. Now I'll be honest, on your own all that space can feel empty, but with four view it makes a lot more sense. Even horde mode is built around squads now. Horde Siege puts three squads of four on the same map. It's a very different horde to what veterans are used to, and I can see that splitting people, but it's clearly the same idea. This game wants you in a squad, and this is the first gears in a long time that actually lets you take that literally. So if you still got three people you used to play gears with, this is the one to get back together for.

So this game found a sneaky way to force you to do side quests. And honestly, more game should steal it. See, Escape Academy 2 drops you and a friend into a secret school where the entire campus is an open world escape room. But some of your classes need supplies, and supplies cost Escape Bucks. You can find them around the map, but the fastest way to earn them is extra credit, which is pretty much just favors for your lazy rich classmates. Ironically though, they work kind of like electives in school. You have to do some of them, you just get to pick which ones. And since there are no micro transactions, you can't pay your way out of them either. usually side quests are a detour from the story, but here there are one method for how a broke student can pay for it, which is a pretty clever way to give you the illusion of choice while still getting you to do them anyway.

This is how a feature that got cut from one game turned into a franchise that sold over a million copies. You see, a small German studio was making a survival game called solarpunk, and early on they experimented with letting you dig into the ground, but it didn't make the cut. So while on vacation, their artist picked it back up and in just three weeks, built a game where all you do is dig a hole. Which shockingly sold 250,000 copies in just the first week. But it quickly sparked a debate about whether or not it should have multiplayer, since it's the perfect game to mess around in with your friends. But it had one hilarious problem. You didn't have a body. Since it was only single player and first person, there were no character models, meaning there was no character for your friends to see. So what did the makers do? They left the first game alone and rebuilt the whole thing from scratch, calling it a game about digging a hole together, with a much longer experience and the ability for up to four of you to share a hole with crossplay. But if you'd still rather dig alone, you can. Which the store page says is for people who, like the devs, don't have any friends.

So a surprising number of this game's steam reviews aren't about the gameplay, they're about one boss, and it's pretty obvious why. So two indie devs spent the last four years building an open world zombie survival game just for everyone to call it a blatant ripoff of another game called surrounded? Which on the surface makes sense considering they're both using the same third party assets, so they look almost identical. But funny enough, Surroundead's own players are the ones that are the most excited because what they've wanted for years is to play it with their friends, yet it's been on the road map for years with no release in sight. Whereas this game is built around co op from the start with no player cap, so you can play with as many players as the host PC can handle. But even then, they don't want to just be surrounded with multiplayer. So they created a fully voiced campaign where your choices have actual consequences, meaning missions change and survivors treat your group differently depending on who you rescue, who you leave behind, and even the weather and time of day. So while Surrounded's own store page says you're left to your own devices to survive, this one's a game about never having to. Which is exactly why it's called Never Be Alone.

Meanwhile, one player is the supervisor, trying to catch people in the act and call the police. But they can't be everywhere at once. That's what the snitches for. They pretend to be a nosy neighbor while secretly texting the supervisor everything they see. But at any moment, players can call a meeting at the community center to try and vote out the snitch. You venture through the fog ridden streets, solving puzzles to uncover the secrets of why you keep waking up here. The problem is, you're not the only thing walking those streets. Which is why you carry a handheld television called the CRT B. And tuning it not only shows you exactly where creatures are, even through the fog in the walls, but it also gives hints on puzzles and more context as to what's going on. So the burnt peanut might have single handedly put this indie game on the map all because of clips of his jump scares going viral. See, Phobos has you and up to seven friends play as the crew of a crumbling space station, except some of you are secretly infected. But to make matters worse, the ship's containment failed, allowing the creatures on board to roam the halls. So while peanuts crew had to try and work through co op puzzles, they also had to dodge the infected players and the monsters at the same time. But even though his infected friends have unique abilities, they don't have it any easier. Everyone is trying to sus them out and vote them off. And watching peanut try to figure all that out was absolutely hilarious because not only was he constantly being harassed by the entities on board, but he was also betrayed by his infected friends more than once. See, you and your friends get hired by Dumbville's least reputable construction company, and your job is to build your way out of construction sites that are more like death traps. Because what makes it tricky is that everything runs on live physics, and that includes friendly fire. This game isn't at all what I expected. After dropping into the zone and joining the stalkers, I was handed nothing but a pistol and sent out into the swamps. At first, everything seemed pretty chill until I ran into a pack of radioactive pigs, although I ended up putting them down pretty easily. But immediately after, the sky suddenly turned red. At first, I was confused by what was going on. So by the time I realized I had to find shelter, it was too late. After that, I left the swamp with one goal, to plant a flag in every region I could. Fine, not because it did anything, just because nobody was stopping me, or so I thought. A group of bandits caught me halfway through planting the third one, and that was the end of my little empire. See, this is the team that launched journey to the Savage Planet on Google Stadia back in 2021, only for Google to shut them down the same day. Yet somehow they managed to get their game back, start a new studio, and release the sequel, revenge of the Savage, which sold over a million copies in just 12 days. But now, after all that chaos and success, they're pivoting to make a hockey game called Breakaway Hockey League. Which on the surface makes no sense, but the gap is actually a lot closer than you might think. After all, the Savage Planet games sold themselves on movement, split second decision making, teamwork, and unforgettable moments. Which, funny enough, are the same principles that make a great hockey game. So that, combined with the fact that PC hasn't had a major hockey game in 18 years since NHL 0 9, means we could be in for something truly special.

This game fixes the worst part of co op survival games in the coolest way possible. See, typically one friend host the world and everyone joins in, so when they inevitably stop playing, your progress is stuck on their save file. But in a loft. Your base is a floating island with sails on it. So when you join someone's world, you can fly your entire island in, bringing along your crops, animals, workshop, all of it, and docking it besides theirs. Meaning eight of you can pull your islands into the same patch of sky and call it a village. But you can always take your house back to your own world. And I genuinely don't get why every co op game doesn't work like this.
