How Long Can a TikTok Be in 2026? Limits, Plus What 24,283 Videos Show

TL;DR

A TikTok can be up to 10 minutes when you record it in the app and up to 60 minutes when you upload a file, though some accounts still see a 10 or 30 minute upload cap while the hour rolls out. In our study of 24,283 videos, length did not change typical views, but longer videos broke out more often: 15.6% of videos under 15 seconds did 3 times the creator's usual views, against 23.1% above 3 minutes.

A TikTok can be up to 10 minutes long when you record it with the in-app camera, and up to 60 minutes when you upload a video file. TikTok has been rolling the one-hour limit out gradually, so some accounts still see a 10 or 30 minute cap on uploads. The quickest way to check yours is to tap the upload button and pick a long file: the app tells you your current limit.

That answers the rule. The more useful question is whether a longer video helps or hurts your views, and for that we have real numbers.

TikTok video length limits in 2026

How you postMaximum length
Recording with the TikTok camera10 minutes
Uploading a video fileUp to 60 minutes (rolling out; some accounts see 10 or 30 minutes)
Videos that earn from the Creator Rewards ProgramMust be longer than 1 minute

Two practical notes. First, the in-app camera offers preset durations, so if you want something specific, record in another app and upload it. Second, the one-minute line matters more than the maximum: only original videos longer than one minute can earn from the Creator Rewards Program, which is why so many creators now aim for 61 seconds or more.

Does video length affect TikTok views?

We looked at 24,283 videos from 518 creators, published between October 2025 and September 2026, and compared each video to its own creator's usual views. That comparison matters: a big account's short video and a small account's long video are not comparable on raw views, but both can be compared to what that same creator normally gets. The full method is in our TikTok benchmarks 2026 study.

Video lengthShare of videosTypical views vs the creator's usualVideos at 3 times usual views or more
Under 15 seconds24.8%1.00×15.6%
15 to 30 seconds25.4%0.99×15.3%
30 to 60 seconds21.6%1.00×17.2%
1 to 3 minutes25.3%1.01×20.2%
Over 3 minutes2.8%1.12×23.1%

Two things stand out.

Length does not hurt the typical video. At every duration, the typical video landed at about the creator's usual views. A 2-minute video is not punished for being long, and a 10-second video is not rewarded for being short.

Longer videos break out more often. The share of videos that did at least 3 times their creator's usual views rose from 15.6% under 15 seconds to 20.2% at 1 to 3 minutes and 23.1% above 3 minutes. The likely reason is watch time: a long video that holds people racks up far more total seconds watched, and that is what TikTok's distribution grades.

So what length should your TikTok be?

The data points to a simple rule: make the video as long as it stays interesting, and no longer.

  • Short (under 30 seconds) suits a single joke, a reaction or one quick tip. It is easy to rewatch, which helps completion rate, but it rarely carries enough watch time to break out.
  • One to three minutes is the sweet spot for most creators in 2026. It qualifies for Creator Rewards, leaves room for a story or a tutorial, and broke out more often than anything shorter in our data.
  • Over three minutes had the highest breakout rate, but it was only 2.8% of videos, and the creators who post long videos tend to be the ones who can hold attention. Padding a 30-second idea to 3 minutes will not get you their results: viewers swipe away, and a fast drop-off is the clearest signal that a video is not worth pushing.

Whatever the length, the first two seconds decide whether anyone stays. If your videos stall at a few hundred views, the length is rarely the problem; the opening usually is. Our guide on why TikToks get stuck at 200 views covers how to read that.

How to test the right length for your account

General averages only go so far, because your audience is not everyone's audience. The reliable way to find your length is to compare your own videos against your own baseline:

  1. Take your last 30 to 50 videos and note each one's length and views.
  2. Work out your median views (the middle value, not the average, which one viral video distorts).
  3. Group the videos by length and check which group beats your median most often.

That is exactly what Viewlify does for any public account: paste a handle and it shows your usual views, which videos beat them by 2, 3 or 10 times, and what those videos have in common, length included.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a TikTok video be?

Up to 10 minutes when recorded in the TikTok app, and up to 60 minutes when uploaded as a file. The one-hour upload limit is rolling out gradually, so some accounts still see a 10 or 30 minute cap.

What is the best length for a TikTok in 2026?

For most creators, 1 to 3 minutes. In our study of 24,283 videos, length did not change typical views, but videos of 1 to 3 minutes broke out more often (20.2%) than videos under 15 seconds (15.6%), and videos over one minute are the only ones that can earn from the Creator Rewards Program.

Do longer TikToks get more views?

Not on a typical post: every length landed at about the creator's usual views. Longer videos did reach 3 times the creator's usual views more often, up to 23.1% of videos above 3 minutes, as long as they kept people watching.

How long does a TikTok need to be to get paid?

Longer than one minute. The Creator Rewards Program only pays on qualified views of original videos over one minute, and it pays roughly $0.40 to $1.00 per 1,000 qualified views. You can estimate your own range with the TikTok money calculator.
